EDENTON, N.C. (WAVY) — One person has been arrested and faces multiple charges in connection to a shooting at a Food Lion in Edenton, North Carolina that injured two people Sunday evening, according to police, who said more charges are possible.
Raymark Devon Bembury, has been charged with the following:
- Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflicting serious injury
- Felony assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill

- Felony discharge of firearm within an enclosure to incite fear (two counts)
- Misdemeanor discharge of a firearm in city limits
- Misdemeanor carry concealed gun
- Misdemeanor going armed to terror of the public
Edenton Police said preliminary findings indicate the incident may have been gang-related and involved three people who knew each other, and police have identified those people. Police said that while they have made an arrest, the shooting is still under investigation, and more charges are possible.
Police said earlier that suspects had been detained following Sunday’s shooting, which took place at a Food Lion off Virginia Road around 6:53 p.m., according to the Edenton Police Department.
The two people who were injured were taken to ECU Health Chowan Hospital, and there’s no word on their conditions.
Police said they believe there is no ongoing threat to the community and that this is an isolated incident. They said the shooting was not part of an active shooter situation and that it was an isolated encounter between people who knew each other, “and does not reflect a broader or random threat to the community.”
While WAVY’s crew was at the scene Sunday night, they saw a person in handcuffs getting placed into a police vehicle.
A witness who was at the Food Lion told WAVY’s Ethan Krauss what happened when the shots were fired.
“I heard the employees yelling, ‘he’s got a gun,’ and then I heard six gunshots,” the witness said. “I ducked down and I grabbed my daughter. People were just screaming and their were people in the back of the store running to the front, I mean, people were just running everywhere, didn’t know where to go. People were crouched down, people were moving stuff off the shelves to hide on the shelves, and the only thing I could think of was I gotta get outside to my car, get out of here because if there’s somebody in the Food Lion, I don’t want to be locked in here and die.”
Edenton Police said it is actively pursuing leads and is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. It said it would also “continue to maintain a visible presence in the area.”
