After winning 10-2 in an away game on Tuesday evening against Wilson Prep Academy in Wilson, N.C., the Cape Hatteras Secondary School’s varsity baseball team will advance to the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) state playoffs.
“The Canes were led defensively by a strong pitching performance from Trae Wyatt, going 5 1/3 innings on the mound, striking out 13, and walking two while scattering six [Wilson Prep Academy] Tiger hits,” said Coach Keith Durham in a summary of the game. “Joey Gavetti came on in relief of Wyatt in the 6th inning, striking out both batters he faced, and McCoy James closed out the game for the Canes while striking out two of three Tiger batters in the 7th inning.
“Offensively, Cape Hatteras was led by freshman Wyatt Cannon, going three for four at the plate with six RBI’s. Senior McCoy James also had a great night at the plate for the Canes, going two for three with two doubles and three RBI’s.”
The Cape Hatteras Hurricanes will now head to Durham to face off against Voyager Academy, which has a 21-2 overall record and a 10-0 conference record. The game will be held on Friday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m. at the Historic Durham Athletic Park, home of the famed Durham Bulls Minor League Baseball Team.
“If you are not busy Friday afternoon, hop on US 64 West and head to Durham to visit some baseball history and watch your Hurricanes take on the Voyager Academy Vikings,” said Coach Durham.
Voyager Academy is the number one seed in the 1A East Regional, while Cape Hatteras is the 17th seed.

Cape Hatteras is one of only three teams from northeastern North Carolina to advance to the second round, and the only team to advance in Dare County, with First Flight High School and Manteo High School losing their first-round state playoff games on Tuesday.
The Canes are coming off of their most successful season in recent history, posting a winning record – 11-8 overall and 7-3 in Atlantic 1A conference play – and a 2nd place conference finish.
2025 marks the first time the Hurricanes have made the state playoffs since 2019, and the third time the Canes have been in the state playoffs in the past 10 years.
Congratulations to the Canes, and good luck on Friday!
For folks who want to make the trek west to cheer on the Cape Hatteras Hurricanes, the address of the historic ballpark is 500 W. Corporation St. in Durham, N.C.
