CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A Currituck County nurse anesthetist and practitioner has been arrested and was being held on $2 million bond after being charged with one count of second-degree forcible rape, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said.

Paul Pellini, 54, of Grandy, N.C. was arrested Feb. 27 after an investigation by the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation, which said that, following interviews and the execution of search warrants, they were able to collect evidence that led to the identification of Pellini as a suspect in the case.
Pellini declined an interview request with 10 On Your Side.
According to the magistrate’s order, Pellini, a certified registered nurse anesthetist and nurse practitioner and medically registered in several states, “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did carnally know and abuse” someone with a mental disability and was physically helpless. It states the offense date as Feb. 26, and the victim is believed to be 20 years old.
Pellini is being held in the Currituck County Detention Center.
Court documents state that Pellini has been appointed a public defender. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for March 12 in Currituck District Court.
10 On Your Side began the day investigating Pellini at his Outer Banks Wellness and Pain Management office. It’s in partnership with East Coast Pain Specialists, where he lists himself as a founding member. He also has a home on Walnut Island.
“I’m just very surprised by this, and it is very hard to hear things like this about people,” said neighbor Sherry Parham. “I never expected that at all, not at all.
