N.C. Highway 12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island reopened at 6 p.m. Thursday after being closed since Tuesday afternoon due to ocean overwash and hazardous driving conditions, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
Ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke resumed alongside the reopening, with departures from Hatteras beginning at 6 p.m. and from Ocracoke-South Dock starting at 7:30 p.m.
NCDOT cautioned that “there will still be some sand and water on the highway in a few sections, so please drive with extreme caution.”
Meanwhile, overwash continues to affect N.C. Highway 12 in Buxton, where saltwater remains on portions of the road. Travelers are urged to slow down and use caution, as saltwater can cause significant damage to vehicles.
