National Park Service announces programs and hours of operation for Thanksgiving Week

The majority of National Park Service (NPS) facilities on the Outer Banks are open during Thanksgiving week, per a recent update from the NPS in its Cape Chronicle Newsletter.

Hours and programs at popular park facilities, (including facilities within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and the Wright Brothers Memorial), are as follows for the week of Nov. 22-28:

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

  • The grounds are open 24 hours a day.
  • Bodie Island Park Store is open daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Museum of the Sea, (across from Cape Hatteras Lighthouse), is open Nov. 25-28 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Hatteras Island Park Store is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Ocracoke Island Discovery Center is open from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Nov. 26-28
  • The base of Ocracoke Lighthouse open from 1-3 p.m. on Nov. 26-28
  • Bonner Bridge Pier is open 24 hours a day.
  • Most beaches are open for permitted night driving (24 hours a day). Off-road vehicle permits must be purchased online. Visit go.nps.gov/beachaccess for beach access updates.
  • This is the final week of the 2021 camping season at Cape Point and Frisco campgrounds. The Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke campgrounds offer year-round camping opportunities. Reservations and payments for campsites must be made online at www.recreation.gov.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

  • The grounds are open 24 hours a day.
  • Lindsay Warren Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The visitor center contains exhibits on the Algonquian, the English, the Roanoke Island Freedmen’s Colony, the Civil War Battle of Roanoke Island, and Reginald Fessenden.
  • Educational programs are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Nov. 27-28.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

  • The park and the park’s National Historic Landmark visitor center are open daily, including Thanksgiving Day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Educational programs are scheduled at 11 a.m. on Nov. 26-28.
