A new 16-car parking area is in the process of being constructed along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) just north of Buxton, close to a stretch of oceanside shoreline that is popular with surfers and beachgoers.

The clay and shell-based parking area, (which is adjacent to soundside ORV Ramp #60), is being constructed by DOT Construction, Inc., which tackled a similar project on Bodie Island in early 2023.

“We expect the parking area to be opened to the public in late February or early March,” stated Michael Barber, Public Affairs Specialist for CHNS. “Once opened, the parking area will provide a safer experience for Cape Hatteras National Seashore recreational visitors and vehicular traffic along a busy stretch of N.C. Highway 12.”

For a complete list of parking areas and ORV ramps, including current beach conditions, see the CHNS website at https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/conditions.htm.
