DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — It’s a steady stream of communication as our area braces for Tropical Storm Debby.

“I don’t think this will be a big, big event that will disrupt your life and property in a big way,” WAVY 10 Meteorologist Steve Fundaro said.

The main concern is the amount of rain expected in places like the Outer Banks and even Hampton Roads.

“Down along the Outer Banks, just check in with NCDOT and NC 12 because it could be some standing water from time to time on the one highway that will get you in and out of the Outer Banks,” he said.

NCDOT officials are bracing for impact.

“In this corner of the state we’ve been doing a lot of preparations, sending loaders from our Manteo maintenance yard down NC 12 in case things happen there,” NCDOT Division 1 Communications Officer Tim Hass said.

While they’re busy doing that, property managers are gearing up for a hectic week too.

“We’re all boots on the grounds, doing constant drive-bys on properties that are prone to flooding, and making sure that are guests are safe,” said Brook Sparks of Coast Realty NC.

She said travelers have questions on whether it’s safe to be in the area this week. The answer is yes, but use caution.

“The biggest threat is for motorists,” Hass said.

For now, everyone awaits this storm to unfold.

“You’ll be able to hang tight and enjoy a couple rainy, stormy days,” Fundaro said.

Said Sparks: “While that doesn’t make for a great vacation, it doesn’t impact the guest and the habitability, there is no sign of that being on the horizon, but this is a great dry run we have to take the weather serious.”
