The Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® (OBAR) hosted its 27th Annual Surf Fishing Tournament in Nags Head in October. The event is part of OBAR’s “Surf, Turf, and Roll” initiative, a series of three fundraising events, including a Surf Fishing, Golf, and Bowling tournament, which invites the community to donate and support OBAR’s charitable funds. With enthusiastic participation from teams across the Outer Banks, the tournament proved to be another fun-filled and successful competition.

This year, Liquid Assets of SAGA Realty & Construction, led by Captain David Sullivan, claimed first place with a total of 58 points. Sea Haven Realty Old School, with Captain Gary Dunstan, followed in second with 39 points. TowneBank Mortgage, captained by Kaye Jones, rounded out the top three with 23 points. The teams reeled in some impressive catches, the largest being a 22” speckled trout caught by Vernon Helms.

Altogether, the tournament raised a total of $10,000, with SAGA Realty & Construction generously donating their entire $600 cash prize back to the fundraiser.

First-time chair Tammy Aycock, along with co-chair Sarah Sheppard, did a fantastic job, ensuring the event ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all. “Tammy and Sarah’s leadership and commitment to making this year’s tournament such a success is deeply appreciated,” said OBAR President Richard Tolson. “It’s a day that brings our REALTOR® community together to give back.”

Proceeds from the tournament and accompanying auction at the Village Beach Club will benefit OBAR’s Scholarship and Disaster Relief funds, both held at the Outer Banks Community Foundation. Since their inception in the 1990s, the funds have awarded scholarships to over 200 students and provided assistance to those affected by storms and other crises on the Outer Banks. Chris Sawin, CEO of the Community Foundation, spoke to the importance of this partnership, saying, “The support from events like the Surf Fishing Tournament has a real and lasting impact on the lives of those in need in our community. We’re so grateful for OBAR’s continued commitment to growing these funds.”

This year’s tournament and auction were made possible thanks to the generous support of sponsors, including Steven Gillis State Farm Agency, Pro 1 Pest Control, Super Wings, Kellogg’s Supply Co, Jason Hanson of Movement Mortgage, Cola Vaughan Realty, Frye Financial, Investment Title, Sam Walker OBX News and many others who contributed to the cause.
