Another round of ocean overwash was reported in northern Buxton, northern Hatteras Village, and Pea Island ahead of Wednesday’s approximate 3:00 p.m. high tide. N.C. Highway 12 is open on Hatteras Island, however, travelers are urged to use caution as overwash flooding will likely increase in the hours ahead.

N.C. Highway 12 remains closed on northern Ocracoke Island, with Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry service suspended. The North Carolina Department of Transportation stated in a Tuesday update that the road will likely be closed until at least Thursday.

Coastal flooding and hazardous surf are expected to peak Wednesday afternoon as the combined influence of Humberto and Imelda drives elevated water levels, strong onshore winds, and large waves. Conditions should begin to improve Thursday, but rough surf and life-threatening rip currents will linger for the rest of the week.

A sixth home collapsed in Buxton at around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday at 46203 Tower Circle Road, according to multiple reports. The home was three bedrooms and two and a half baths, and was built in 1984.

Five additional oceanfront homes collapsed in Buxton on Tuesday afternoon, September 30, and within an hour of the 2:15 p.m. high tide.

The National Park Service intends to coordinate with owners for cleanup operations once hazardous ocean conditions have subsided and it is safe to do so. The beach in Buxton remains closed to the public due to piles of hazardous debris. Additional home collapses are likely in Buxton and possibly Rodanthe on Wednesday afternoon.

Tuesday’s home collapses bring the total to seven oceanfront home collapses in Buxton over the past two weeks. Another Buxton home built in 1976 collapsed on September 16 at 46227 Tower Circle Road.

There have now been 18 home collapse on Hatteras Island since 2020. The other home collapses occurred in Rodanthe, which includes six oceanfront homes that fell in 2024.
