Manteo Elementary School fourth grader Carla Vasquez Mendez won second place in the Pea Island Preservation Society essay contest.

During Black History Month, fourth graders wrote essays based upon the “Freedmen, Surfmen, Heroes” lesson, which taught about Richard Etheridge and the all-black crew he commanded at Station Pea Island.
