PAMLICO COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — A multi-agency law enforcement search continues on Tuesday night in Pamlico County for local officers, but others are being sent home.

Law enforcement officers from different parts of the state are heading back home after assisting in the search for a suspect after a vehicle chase.

Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis said the N.C. Highway Patrol chased a car from Reelsboro to Kennels Beach Road in Grantsboro in the morning hours of the day.

He said the driver got out of the car and ran away. Officers from Craven, Lenoir, Nash, Carteret and Martin counties aided in the search.

Sheriff Davis said they knocked on doors and set up checkpoints to ensure people were safe.

“We’re to a point tonight where we have exhausted all of our leads that have came in with outside agencies and we are at a point where we can send those folks home. The local law enforcement sheriff’s office will continue working night, but we felt we were at a point where we could send the rest of the guys home,” Sheriff Davis said.

“We’ve had different drones flying at one time, we’ve had helicopters, fixed-wing aircrafts, boats in the creek, we have had law enforcement on the ground,” Sheriff Davis said. “I think at one time, we had over 150 law enforcement officers here working on this. It’s a big day here and we wanna do everything we can to keep our community safe.”

Sheriff Davis also said they don’t know why the Highway Patrol attempted to pull the driver over or who that person is.

The chase and search did cause two schools in the area to be placed on lockdown earlier in the day.
