It’s not too late to sign up for the first-ever Surf or Sound Lighthouse 5K. This brand new race takes place in the shadow of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Labor Day, September 2, and the inaugural event will give participants an up-close look at the ongoing restoration project while supporting a range of Hatteras Island charities.

Online registration ended on Saturday night, but in-person registration will be available on Sunday, September 1, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the Buxton Lighthouse, and on race day beginning at 6:15 a.m. at the race start area.

The new-in-2023 Barrier Island Group (B.I.G.), in cooperation with the National Park Service, will be hosting the 5K run or walk through the newly-designed Cape Hatteras Lighthouse grounds and surrounding park and pathway, with stunning views of the scaffolded lighthouse along the way.

“If you are still undecided about what to do to make your Labor Day Special, Barrier Island Group (B.I.G.) would like you to know there is still time to join them for the first annual Labor Day Lighthouse 5K run-walk through the beautiful remodeled grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse as it undergoes its renovation,” stated B.I.G organizers in a recent announcement.

“All participants receive a commemorative tee, an eco-friendly reusable water cup for use on the course, and an absolutely amazing finishers medal commemorating the lighthouse restoration. The run/walk begins at 7:30 a.m. at the old lighthouse site/beach access and will once again support local Hatteras Island charities – Hatteras Island Meals, Outer Banks Buddies and the Buxton-Frisco Pathway. Come on out and do some good for yourself as wll as your community!”
