PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Much of the area, from the Peninsula to the Outer Banks, saw wintry weather overnight and into the morning — with snow on the roads, in the parking lots and even on the beach.
10 On Your Side’s Deja Parker was in Virginia Beach Wednesday morning and found about two inches of snow on the ground on Indian River Road.
In Suffolk, some were lucky to see an inch. That, however, did not stop kids from enjoying the day off from school and the snow they did get. 10 On Your Side ran into a group of friends who instead of sleds, were out riding their bicycles.
“When you ride in it, it can make you go the other way and fall,” one young girl said.
It was not how they planned to spend the day, but they enjoyed it nevertheless.
While the Virginia Department of Transportation prepared the roads for the snowy conditions, much of the roads are still dangerous to trek on — drivers are encouraged to stay home. For those who still need to hit the roads, however, VDOT said to take it slow and to make sure your car has been cleared of snow before hitting the roads.
One of the hardest hit areas in our region was northeastern North Carolina, especially in Currituck County, where WAVY’s Keagan Hughes could be found on this snowy Wednesday morning.
Much of Route 168 was impassable, according to Keagan. While trying to make her way down to Kitty Hawk, she found that a lot of the path was not plowed yet.

Several schools and city services throughout the region announced closures due to the weather. The full list can be viewed here.
