Roughly 150 people participated in the “No Kings March” in Avon on Saturday morning, October 18, gathering along N.C. Highway 12 for a peaceful protest opposing the actions of the Trump administration.
Leslie Kriewald, precinct chair of the Avon Democratic Precinct, said the group included local residents, non-resident homeowners, and visitors. “On a beautiful October morning, approximately 150 people peacefully marched to protest the actions of the Trump administration,” Kriewald said. “Led by a woman wearing an American eagle costume and waving an American flag, protesters waved a variety of signs airing their grievances … It was a peaceful protest as Americans exercised their First Amendment rights.”
Participants carried handmade signs addressing a range of issues, including health care, immigration, and government accountability. Messages included “No Kings in America Since 1776,” “Free Speech,” and “No Crown for a Clown.”
Aida Havel, who took part in the march, said she felt it was important to stand up publicly for democratic principles. “As an attorney, it was important to me to speak up for the rule of law and to document the abuses of power that are happening in our country today,” she said. “It’s not a normal time, and I wanted to let people who are feeling scared know that there is strength and power in numbers.”
The demonstration took place under clear skies and concluded without incident.
