The Avon Volunteer Fire Department will launch a new holiday tradition next week with its first-ever Christmas tree lighting, held in conjunction with the department’s annual Community Dinner on Friday, Dec. 6.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the 16-foot tree—sourced from Greenbrier Farms in Chesapeake, Va.—will be lit at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature a lasagna dinner with garlic bread, drinks, and cookies. Attendees are encouraged to bring a canned good for donation to the local food bank, a request the department is making for all of its holiday events.
Chief Frank Hopkins said this is the first time the station has hosted a tree lighting, and noted that the evergreen will continue to grow one to two feet per year, allowing the tradition to expand in future seasons.
The festivities continue on Sunday, Dec. 8, when Santa Claus returns for his annual ride through the village starting at 4:30 p.m. Santa is expected to arrive at the station by 5:30 p.m., where volunteers will hand out cookies, drinks, and accept canned-good donations.
More information will be available on the Avon VFD’s social media channels as the event approaches.
