CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) – The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is urging people to stay away from the beachfront, as the seashore is under a Tropical Storm Warning due to Hurricane Erin.
The Seashore is also under a Storm Surge Warning, with the forecasts indicating the potential for life-threatening surf conditions along area beaches.
The beaches have been closed since Monday. Crews were out Tuesday working on the dunes, but NCDOT said “given the winds, wave heights and storm surge forecast, it likely won’t be enough.”

Evacuation orders for Hatteras and Ocracoke have been in effect since Aug. 17, as the coast awaits Hurricane Erin.
“If you are still on Hatteras Island and have not yet evacuated, now is the time to do so,” Dare County Emergency Management said in a Tuesday afternoon update.
