The Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men (CHUMM) recently detailed its achievements during its 47th year of operation, highlighting the extensive assistance the nonprofit organization provided to Hatteras Islanders throughout 2025.

It was a challenging year for many residents, marked by repeated adverse weather events and rising living costs. With a mission of “providing humanitarian aid for Hatteras Islanders for the storms of nature, and storms of life,” CHUMM stated that it spent nearly $300,000 on direct aid and logged hundreds of volunteer hours addressing a range of needs across the island.

CHUMM’s assistance covered a wide range of services intended to improve safety, stability, and quality of life for vulnerable residents.

Over the past year, CHUMM made a meaningful difference in the community by:

  • Assisting with the cleanup of storm-caused home collapses in Buxton.
  • Installing and maintaining ramps, wheelchair lifts, and stairlifts that allow many disabled and elderly residents to regain mobility.
  • Providing heating and cooling systems for families and elderly residents who could not afford the full cost themselves.
  • Repairing or replacing leaky roofs and addressing structural, mold, plumbing, and electrical issues.
  • Providing refrigerators, stoves, and other critical appliances to residents with limited resources.
  • Offering temporary rental assistance to family providers injured on the job and to working single mothers with young children.

CHUMM emphasized that it “is and will continue to be there for Hatteras Islanders through every storm of life,” noting that community donations remain essential for sustaining the organization’s year-round mission.

Looking ahead, the organization expects the next 12 months to bring new challenges for the barrier island but affirmed its commitment to respond wherever help is needed.

“CHUMM will be there for those in need, and so can you,” the organization stated in the update. “CHUMM can’t do it without you.”
