Currituck commissioners amended the county ordinance related to animal services on July 21 at their regular meeting.

The ordinance was changed to further clarify the definition of animal cruelty. It is now unlawful to tether an animal outside during a hurricane warning, or if an animal is not safe from predators, or if it is not well-suited to tolerate its environment.

Environmental factors include a heat advisory, a severe weather warning, or a period when the temperature is 85° Fahrenheit or higher or 32° Fahrenheit or lower.
