COROLLA, N.C. (WAVY) — Currituck County officials have issued a local state of emergency Tuesday and a mandatory evacuation in the off-road area of Corolla due to Hurricane Erin.

Officials expect the beach strand driving area, the only way in and out of the off-road area for residents, to become impassable by Thursday afternoon, with localized flooding in the neighborhood behind the dunes.

Anyone needing evacuation help should call Currituck County Emergency Management at 252-232-2115, and residents are reminded to take all household pets with them.

Officials have warned residents that response times to emergency calls and power outages may be limited and not as timely. Double red flags are posted along the ocean.

People can sign up for alerts about the storm through Currituck Alert by texting CTUCKALERT to 888-777, and for alerts specific to Corolla and the four-wheel drive beaches, text SAFECOROLLA to 888-777.
