Dare County has released a new video featuring Chief Jack Scarborough of the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, who provides an important update on Hurricane Erin. Chief Scarborough warns that 2–4 feet of storm surge combined with large breaking waves are expected to push water inland beginning with tonight’s 6 p.m. high tide (Wednesday, August 20, 2025), making it extremely difficult—if not impossible—for rescue crews to respond to emergencies.

Additionally, he urges Hatteras Island residents who did not evacuate to take immediate precautions, which includes moving vehicles and outdoor property to higher ground, preparing to shelter in place, and being ready for the water to rise on both the oceanside and soundside of Hatteras Island as the storm progresses. Chief Scarborough also notes that conditions may persist through Friday, August 22, 2025 and stresses the importance of being prepared now to stay safe.
