Dare County has announced that its debris removal contractor, Dupon, will conduct the final round of debris collection in Buxton on Wednesday, October 22, following the recent home collapses that occurred in the area.
Homeowners of the affected properties are asked to work with their contractors to move debris from their collapsed homes to the right-of-way located along the east side of Old Lighthouse Road no later than Wednesday morning (October 22). Once placed there, the county’s contractor will collect and dispose of the material. Do not place any debris on the right-of-way after Wednesday, October 22.
This will be the final debris collection effort conducted by Dare County’s contractor related to the home collapses. Dare County previously coordinated an emergency debris removal operation with Dupon from Wednesday, October 8 to Saturday, October 18 after eight unoccupied Buxton homes collapsed into the ocean during a three-day period due to severe beach erosion caused by a strong coastal storm.
This initial cleanup effort was conducted as an emergency response to an unprecedented situation in order to protect public safety and facilitate a timely cleanup of the affected area; however, it is not financially feasible for Dare County to continue to provide debris removal services for private properties. Property owners will be responsible for working with their private contractors to coordinate any debris removal going forward.
Dare County appreciates the cooperation and understanding of the affected homeowners, their contractors and the Hatteras Island community as this final debris collection effort is completed.
