The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is hosting a wave of events in August, which includes talks by historians and special guest speakers, programs that explore some of the Outer Banks’ most famous landmarks, and special activities designed for kids.
A list of August’s events is below, and many of the special presentations are free to the public.
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village is named in honor of the thousands of shipwrecks that rest in the waters off North Carolina’s coast, and is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the state’s coastal and shipwreck history.
Located at 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated.
Maritime Crafts for Kids
August 4 at 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Join staff and volunteers for maritime crafts in the museum library/education space located off of the lobby. The program is free and open to the public. All supplies are furnished. Registration is not required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
August 5 at 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Join National Park Service Ranger Ann-Marie to learn about the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The program is part of the museum’s Salty Dawgs Lecture Series, which features presentations on North Carolina maritime history and culture. These programs are scheduled at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays from May 20 through Aug. 26 in the museum, located at 59200 Museum Drive in Hatteras. The series is free and open to the public. Changing Sands and Rising Seas: The Future of Maritime Heritage

Located in a highly dynamic environment, maritime heritage resources offer insight into past coastlines and communities. Join Maddie Roth, a PhD Candidate in East Carolina University’s Integrated Coastal Sciences Program, to learn about opportunities to better understand and preserve shipwreck sites, aids to navigation, and the maritime traditions of the North Carolina coast. The program is part of the museum’s Salty Dawgs Lecture Series, which features presentations on North Carolina maritime history and culture.
