Schools on Hatteras Island will remain closed Tuesday, October 14, as flooding and hazardous road conditions continue to impact travel.

Cape Hatteras Elementary School and Cape Hatteras Secondary School will both be closed today, according to Dare County Schools officials. The district cited ongoing coastal flooding from recent storms that have made several stretches of N.C. Highway 12 difficult or unsafe to navigate.

Today will serve as an Optional Workday for staff. Employees are asked to contact their supervisors regarding their plans. Those unable to report in person or work remotely may take leave, according to the district.

Dare Early College staff will continue to provide virtual instruction for Hatteras Early College students while travel remains restricted.

To make up for the lost day, the Dare County Board of Education voted Monday night to designate Friday, October 17, 2025, as a regular instructional day for students and staff.

District leaders said they are hopeful that conditions will improve in the coming days, allowing schools to reopen safely later this week.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate another round of unpredictable weather,” the district stated.
