Scratchmade Snackery has been named the Finest Bakery in North Carolina in the 2025 Carolina’s Finest Awards, earning statewide recognition and a celebrated win for Hatteras Village.

The annual contest, hosted by Carolina Country magazine, highlights “the best North Carolina has to offer,” with winners chosen by reader votes. Scratchmade Snackery advanced to the final round this summer after being selected as one of three top bakeries in the state, and voting wrapped up in August before the winners were announced this fall.

For the colorful bakery along N.C. Highway 12, the accolade marks a milestone that reflects years of persistence, early-morning starts, and deep community support. Co-owner Chris “Kitty” Kellum Oden said the philosophy behind the business has always been simple and steady.

“Years ago, my Mom gave me a notepad in my Christmas stocking that was imprinted with the words ‘Success comes to those who persist with dedication.’ That phrase really stuck with me, and I guess you could call it my motto. Kyle and I kept showing up, day after day.”

The award also highlights the strong support from customers across the Outer Banks and beyond, many of whom cast votes to help the bakery secure the statewide title.

“[We’re] grateful to have such loyal customers who voted for us,” said Oden.

The business recently wrapped its 2025 operating season and will reopen in spring 2026, but the honor will no doubt bring new visitors — and longtime regulars — eager to celebrate and sample the ‘scratch-made’ goodies behind North Carolina’s latest culinary crown.
