The Hatteras Village Haunted Trail will return on Saturday, October 25, from 8 to 10 p.m., offering visitors a spine-tingling stroll through one of the island’s eeriest paths. The event, sponsored by the Hatteras Village Civic Association, costs $5 per person.

Guests are asked to park at the Hatteras Civic Center, where they will be transported to the trail by trailer. A sensory-friendly version of the Haunted Trail will be offered at 7 p.m. for those seeking a lighter experience before the full event begins at 8 p.m.

First launched in 2016, the Haunted Trail has become a chilling annual tradition. “Back in 2016, we decided that our beautiful trail could be utilized and shared for many reasons and purposes,” said Karla Jarvis of the Hatteras Village Civic Association. “So I came up with the idea of the haunted trail. If you have ever walked back there at night, you know that you don’t need skeletons or haunters or a chainsaw man to creep you out – It is scary back there on its own!”

The first Haunted Trail drew just a couple dozen visitors, but it has since grown into a community-wide production. “We’ve got ticket people, loaders, drivers, and probably about 25 other people who are building scenes, putting tech stuff in and volunteering that night on the trail,” said Jarvis

Jarvis credited local volunteers Sam Midgett, Nick Stutts, and Elisa Addabbo.— “the brains behind the design and builds on the trail for the past couple of years” — for helping turn the event into a signature fall attraction. “Now we have a couple hundred people come through each year,” she said. “But it’s fun… fun for us, and fun for those that come through.”

The Haunted Trail has persevered through flooding, high winds, and hurricanes since its debut, and this year’s return promises both fright and fun for islanders and visitors alike.
