Hurricane Humberto is expected to remain over the western Atlantic into early next week, while Invest 94L near Hispaniola could strengthen into a tropical depression this weekend in the Bahamas, according to the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.

Forecasters said swells from Humberto will begin arriving Monday, with the most significant impacts likely Tuesday and Wednesday. Wave heights of 12-15 feet are possible offshore, and the system is expected to bring dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and an increasing threat of beach erosion and ocean overwash along the Outer Banks.

“The risk of impacts from AL94 are increasing for portions of the Southeast U.S.,” the NWS stated. “Inland impacts associated with AL94 are possible, but are heavily dependent on the track and intensity. This continues to be a unique setup with impacts from two separate tropical systems.”

Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said the only certainty at this point is hazardous ocean conditions. “Still significant uncertainty, especially with Invest AL94,” he said Thursday evening. “Right now, the only real certainty is ocean conditions are going to become hazardous over the weekend and into next week. Don’t let the hype on social media and other less trustworthy sources consume you. That said, it is always a good time to review your plans, check your disaster kit, and get things ready just in case.”
