KITTY HAWK, NC (WAVY) — While parts of the Outer Banks were inundated with a strong storm surge from Hurricane Erin, visitors and locals enjoyed a slightly calmer Thursday morning.

NC 12, a main highway along the southern shores, was closed in southern sections of the Outer Banks.

There was a different scene in Kitty Hawk as there were no substantial impacts from the storm surge.

However, the tropical storm’s forceful winds and violent waves created a spectacle some visitors had never seen before.

“I knew they were bad, but I didn’t know wind like this was really bad or the waves got that big. Up north, it doesn’t get like this,” said a young visitor from Massachusetts.

For those who grew up in the Outer Banks, it was still a sight worth seeing.

“It’s very powerful. This is definitely stronger than I thought it was going to be. I am glad that right now all we really see is powerful waves,” said Grandy resident Anna. “I got up really early this morning about 5:30 a.m. We live in Grandy, just decided we had to see what the storm was doing to our little island.”
