With N.C. Department of Transportation officials now deeming all of N.C. 12 in Dare County safe for travel, county officials have announced a phased lifting of evacuation orders for Hatteras Island beginning at noon today.
At that time, residents, property owners and workers will be allowed access to N.C. 12 at the Basnight Bridge. Visitors will be allowed access beginning at 5 a.m. Sunday morning.
The highway was closed the evening of Aug. 20 after severe overwash from Hurricane Erin inundated several sections of N.C. 12. Since then, NCDOT crews have been working to clear N.C. 12 between high tide cycles to make the road safe for travel.
N.C. 12 remains closed at the north end of Ocracoke Island between the South Dock Ferry Terminal and the National Park Service Pony pens. Crews continue working to clear deep sand and water off that section of highway, and will reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.
