N.C. Highway 12 on northern Ocracoke Island will reopen to traffic at 5 p.m. today, following a closure that began Monday after multiple cycles of ocean overwash made the roadway impassable.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced Friday afternoon that one lane of the highway will reopen with automated traffic signals to guide motorists through the affected section. Drivers should expect lingering sand and standing water on the roadway and are urged to use caution.

“Please travel through this area with extreme caution, especially after dark,” stated the NCDOT. “Our crews will be back tomorrow morning to clear any overnight sand obstructions.”

The route, which serves as the only roadway access to and from Ocracoke, has been closed since Monday due to repeated overwash during multiple high-tide cycles. Crews have been working throughout the week to clear sand and rebuild protective berms along the vulnerable oceanside stretch.

Vehicle ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke will also resume at 5 p.m., restoring island access for residents, workers, and visitors ahead of the weekend.
