Storm surge from Hurricane Erin floods highway in several areas
Due to extensive ocean overwash and dune breaches from Hurricane Erin, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has closed N.C. 12 south of the Marc Basnight Bridge to Hatteras Village in Dare County Wednesday night, August 20, 2025. The highway is also closed on the north end of Ocracoke Island in Hyde County between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal.
