The Cape Hatteras Secondary School (CHSS) Drama Club will debut its long-awaited production of “Newsies” this weekend, bringing one of Broadway’s most energetic and fast-paced musicals to the local stage.

Performances will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the CHSS auditorium, marking the culmination of months of rehearsals that began before the start of the school year. Students have been preparing for the show’s demanding choreography, quick scene changes, and large ensemble numbers that define the Tony Award-winning musical memorable.

CHSS Drama Club Director Blake Taft said “Newsies” is one of the most technically and physically challenging shows the club has taken on, requiring extensive work behind the scenes as well as on stage. The production includes more dance-heavy sequences than previous shows, as well as sets designed to echo the gritty world of 1899 New York City.

Inspired by the real Newsboys Strike, the musical follows Jack Kelly and his fellow “newsies” as they push back against aggressive price hikes imposed by the city’s most influential newspaper tycoons. What begins as a street-level protest quickly grows into a movement that tests their courage, unity, and determination to be heard.

With a cast of 27 actors and 12 stagehands and technicians, the show is backed by one of the largest teams yet for the CHSS Theater Program. “The energy in the room is amazing,” said Taft. “The kids wanted to do this show, and that personal investment makes all the difference.”

Ultimately, Taft hopes “Newsies” will remind audiences that local theater can be as powerful as it is entertaining.

“We hope everyone comes out to see it,” said Taft. “If you’re visiting from out of town, come see it — it’s going to blow your mind. And the more people who show up to support our talented and awesome kids, the better.”
