Ocean overwash was reported in Buxton on Sunday morning, coinciding with the approximate 6:45 a.m. high tide. Motorists are urged to use caution, as standing water may remain on vulnerable areas of N.C. Highway 12, including northern Buxton and Pea Island.
An oceanfront home at 46006 Cottage Avenue in Buxton also collapsed at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, marking the tenth such collapse in the village since mid‑September.
The immediate shoreline may conceal hazards such as nails, glass, and unstable boards from the collapsed structure, and the public is advised to stay clear of the affected site until crews have completed cleanup operations.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Monday, with drier air moving in and breezy northeast winds helping to clear water from the highway.
