A Buxton oceanfront home that had been at imminent risk of collapse was successfully moved to Diamond Shoals Drive on Wednesday, Nov. 12, marking the first relocation in the severely eroded stretch of northern Buxton.

The 1975 home, purchased by Dabby Williams’ parents in 1981, has been a gathering place for four generations and became Lat and Dabby Williamses’ full-time residence after their retirement in 2017.

It was one of dozens of structures in the immediate area endangered by accelerating erosion and oceanside flooding; in a six-week span this fall, 15 homes collapsed in Buxton, with an additional collapse occurring in Rodanthe.

Lat and Dabby Williams chose to move the house both to preserve it and to avoid adding to the debris and pollution created when oceanfront homes fall into the surf.

The relocation was carried out by ACE House Movers with local partner JT Malys. Crews cut the pilings beneath the home, installed steel beams and a rolling system, and transported the structure inland during a period of favorable weather. The move was conducted in stages to allow essential traffic — including school buses — to access Old Lighthouse Road.

The home is now secured on its new lot on Diamond Shoals Drive, where final site work is underway.
