The Friends of the Outer Banks History Center and Downtown Books, in collaboration with College of The Albemarle (COA) – Dare and the COA Social Science Department, will open the 2025–2026 Speaker Series with a presentation by historian and author Kevin P. Duffus on Monday, October 27.

Duffus, an award-winning maritime research historian, will share insights from his latest work, “The Inventor Reginald Fessenden and the Origins of American Radio on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.”

The presentation will explore Fessenden’s pioneering experiments conducted on Roanoke Island in 1902, which helped shape the development of modern radio and broadcasting.

The event will take place in Veterans’ Hall (DARA 110) at COA – Dare on Oct. 27. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The program is free and open to the public.

Kevin Duffus will also discuss his new book at two Hatteras Island events

  • Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 1–3 p.m. at Buxton Village Books; and
  • Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 3–6 p.m. at Lee Robinson General Store in Hatteras.
