Fisheries Commission to Meet Nov. 19-20

NC DMF, division of marine fisheriesThe North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission will take possible action during its Nov. 19-20 meeting on prohibiting the repackaging of foreign crabmeat in North Carolina, as well as on small mesh gill net rules and gear restrictions as a management tool for artificial reefs in state ocean waters.

The meeting, which will be held by web conference, are to begin at 9 a.m. each day.

The public can listen to the meeting by phone or listen and view presentations online. A 30-minute public comment period is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting on Nov. 19.  To speak during comment period register by 5 p.m. Nov. 17. To accommodate as many speakers as possible, the chairman may limit the time each speaker may comment.

Agenda items also include a discussion of the commercial and recreational harvest allocations for southern flounder as part of the Southern Flounder Fishery Management Plan draft amendment 3 and presentations on a recently completed striped bass assessment reports, the 2019 commercial and recreational landings and the development of the 2021 Coastal Habitat Protection Plan.

The commission will also vote on nominees for at-large seats on the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and decide on final approval of readoption of Marine Fisheries Commission rules regarding Coastal Recreational Waters Monitoring, Evaluation, and Notification.

Members of the public can submit written comments until 5 p.m. Nov. 17 through an online form or mailed to  North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission, P.O Box 769, Morehead City, NC 28557.
