Moores Creek National Battlefield will take visitors to the 18th century 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, during its Patriot’s Day living history event.

There will be 18th century toys and games, a demonstration of a tar kiln and the naval stores industry, colonial medicine, historic weapons demonstrations, colonial beverages, candle making and other activities during the free event at the site in Pender County.

Patriots Day was first established to remember the victims of the Sept. 11th, 2001, attacks. “When the date was first established as a holiday, citizens were invited to ‘observe the day with ceremonies and activities…’ In this spirit, park staff, volunteers, and other living historians will be offering a variety of demonstrations and programs,” park officials said.

Moores Creek commemorates the battle between Loyalist and Patriots that took place in February 1776 at this site, which was the first significant victory for the Patriots in the American Revolution, according to the website.

Event information will be posted as it becomes available, including times for the weapons demonstrations, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/moorescreeknps or visit our website at www.nps.gov/mocr.

Masks are required in all National Park Service buildings, including the Moores Creek National Battlefield Visitor Center and Patriots Hall, regardless of location or vaccination status. Masks must be worn in outdoors spaces where physical distancing cannot be maintained, such as narrow or busy trails and overlooks, the release states.
